Here is a presentation of a proposal for researching the design of online learning so as to accommodate cultural differences based on the dimensions of individualism/collectivism and horizontal/vertical cultures(power-distance). At the core of this is the importance of developing awareness of differences, what those differences are and how to design courses to accommodate differences while also supporting learners to adapt to the dominant cultural values and ultimately enabling all students adapt to values that are aligned with socio-constructivist learning theory. I look forward to any feedback and suggestions.
Anthony,
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that even with our (you and I) diverse backgrounds we selected virtually the same topic. I find this relevant to my work in that I develop online courses for a wide student audience. You seem to approach the topic from specific results of courses that you have taught. I also read some of Hofstede's work and see him as someone who has truly explored at a deep level on this topic.
Hi Lisa. Thanks for the feedback. It is interesting that we (as well as Dwayne) arrived at the same topic. It is a really interesting topic with many interesting avenues of investigation. I think though we seem to start from the same point we will go in different directions with our final papers. It seems like you and Kristen are looking at some really practical approaches to accommodating cultural differences. I'm taking a different perspective where I'm looking at how to create a blend between accommodation and assimilation to form an integrated learning environment. Hofstede's work is really important for understanding cultures. His book Cultures and Organizations is a great book to read if you find the time to read it.
